("Squamish Gas") applied for Commission approval, pursuant to Section 67(2) of the Utilities Commission Act, of amendments to its Gas Tariff, Rate Schedule 1 - General Service Rate to allow for a pass-through increase of 26 percent in propane product costs from the Company's supplier, Superior Propane Inc., effective with consumption January 1, 1991; and B . Squamish Gas included in the above increase the recovery from the Propane Cost Deferral Account by increasing Rider 1 from $0.096 to $0.322 per Ccf effective January 1, 1991; and C. By letter dated December 13, 1990 the District of Squamish raised concerns about the propane price increases to Squamish Gas customers; and D. The Commission has reviewed the Application and other documentation and is of the opinion that a public hearing is in the public interest. NOW THEREFORE the Commission hereby orders as follows: 1. The Application by Squamish Gas to increase rates for General Service customers and to increase Rider 1, both effective January 1, 1991, is deferred pending the outcome of a public hearing. 2. A public hearing into the Squamish Gas Application is to commence at 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday, February 11, 1991 at the Garibaldi Highlander Hotel, 40330 Tantalus Way, Garibaldi Highlands, Squamish, B.C. 3. Squamish Gas will arrange for publication in display ad format, not later than January 19, 1991, of a Notice of Public Hearing in the Squamish Times and such other appropriate local news publications as may properly provide adequate notice to the population in the service area of the utility. 4. Squamish Gas will arrange for public service announcements and spot-radio advertisements concerning the proposed increase in propane costs and the scheduling of the public hearing. 5. THE APPLICATION Squamish Gas Co. Ltd. ("Squamish Gas") applied to the Commission to increase rates charged to its General Service rate customers by 37.4 cents per Ccf and to increase the amount to be recovered from Rider 1, the Propane Purchase Deferral Account, from 9.6 cents per Ccf to 32.2 cents per Ccf, both effective January 1, 1991. The combined increases, if approved, would amount to an approximate increase of 26 percent or 60.0 cents per Ccf over existing rates. The Commission deferred approval of the increases and has set the matter down for public hearing.
