McIntyre, Chairman: J.D. V. Newlands, Deputy Chairman; July 20, 1989 N. Martin, Commissioner; and W.M. Swanson, Q.c. Commissioner o R D E R WHEREAS the Commission has become increasingly concerned about the aging of gas appliances and the safety of their continued operation; and WHEREAS the Commission requested on February I, 1989 that provincially regulated gas utilities respond to the Commission's concerns; and WHEREAS the utilities responded with suggestions on gas appliance safety; and WHEREAS the Commission has reviewed those responses and finds the matter of gas appliance safety to be sufficiently important that customers are so advised. NOW THEREFORE pursuant to Section 28 of the Utilities Commission Act, the Commission hereby orders as follows: l. Provincially regulated gas utilities are required to develop a brochure notifying customers that annual servicing of appliances by a licensed gas fi tter is advisable. The brochure should also give some basic advice on how to recognize common appliance faults and what actions to take. 2. The brochure should be of a generic nature and be sent to customers annually along with normal utility customer billings beginning in the Fall, 1989. . .• /2 SIXTH FLOOR. 900 HOWE STREET. VANCOUVER. 3. The availability of a suitable inspection/maintenance package for Customer appliances should be coordinated by the utility in cooperation with Contractors Association of British Columbia. 4. Utility repair, maintenance and service personnel should visually inspect and report on the condi tion of residential gas appliances whenever there are service calls or meter changes. 5. A brief report which summarizes the problems identified through Item 4 above is required to be submitted to the Commission at the end of each calendar year.
